The impeller is often called the “heart” of a pump or compressor. Its blade profile accuracy, balance quality and surface finish directly determine the efficiency, vibration and service life of the whole machine. At GiantRoc we have built an end-to-end quality control system for impeller manufacturing, from raw casting to finished part.
1. Main Impeller Types
Impellers are classified as closed, semi-open and open. Closed impellers offer higher efficiency for clean fluids; semi-open and open designs tolerate solids and high-viscosity media better. Each type imposes different requirements on machining and dynamic balancing, so manufacturing must follow the duty closely.
2. Precision Manufacturing Process
A typical flow is: blank (casting/forging) → rough machining → 5-axis CNC finish machining → dynamic balancing → CMM inspection → cleaning and packing. The critical blade profile and shroud mating surfaces are usually machined in a single setup on a 5-axis machining center to maximize geometric consistency.
3. Key Quality Control Points
(1) Profile accuracy: blade exit angle, wrap angle and flow-path shape must meet the design; (2) Surface roughness: smoother flow passages mean lower hydraulic losses; (3) Balance grade: high-speed impellers shall reach G2.5 or better; (4) Dimensional consistency: key dimensions are checked by CMM with full or sampled inspection for traceability.
